What Should I Do to Properly Store Outdoor Furniture?

GBS Enterprises, a company with locations in Nevada, Nebraska, and Florida, sells Health Sleep products and furniture warranty plans to the pest control, furniture, and hospitality industries. Individuals with a GBS warranty receive protection for a variety of both indoor and outdoor furniture.

If you live in an area where winters bring snow and rain, you must store your outdoor furniture to ensure it stays protected. As you prepare to store this type of furniture, make sure you clean everything. Any dirt or moisture left on your outdoor furniture will grow during winter, thus leaving it damaged when you bring it out for the summer.

Most plastic, mesh, iron, and wicker furniture can be cleaned with a dish soap and water solution. For metal furniture, use detergent and water. Wipe every surface of your furniture and let it dry completely before storing it. Further, remove all cushions and wipe the areas that those cushions covered. If these cushions have removable covers, wash and dry the covers according to the manufacturer labels. Then stack the dry cushions and covers off the floor in a dry and clean space.

It’s also a good idea for you to add a protective coating to your furniture so it stays clean throughout winter. A thin coat of car wax protects most plastic and aluminum pieces, while paste wax protects wicker furniture. With metal furniture, make sure there are no signs of rust anywhere on it and then spray it with a silicone sealant.

Finally, you should protect your furniture from the weather by placing it in a storage shed or garage. Alternately, if you don’t have enough indoor space, you can use a tarp or furniture covers. Furniture covers should fit around your outdoor furniture tight enough that they stay put in windy weather, but tarps need to be tied down to ensure they don’t blow away during the season.
